Charles Ward Apthorp, a prominent merchant, served on the Royal Council for New York prior to the American Revolution. He owned a mansion at Bloomingdale, near the present-day intersection of 91st Street and 10th Avenue. In 1779 he was indicted for treason for his loyalist beliefs, and a year later his estate was confiscated and offered for sale. After the war, he returned to New York and the charges against him were dropped.
