Samuel Auchmuty, an Anglican minister, graduated from Harvard in 1742. Five years later, the Bishop of London ordained him as a deacon and priest. In 1748 he began as assistant minister of Trinity Chruch, New York, and also catechist to the Negroes for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. From 1764 until his death, he served as Trinity Church’s rector.
